Fall Writing Prompts for November 2023 Free Instant Download PDF

Fall Writing Prompts for November 2023 Free Instant Download PDF

Fall Writing Prompts for November 2023 Free Instant Download PDF

Trees provide endless opportunities for drawing and writing. With leaves falling and branches beginning to bare, our imaginations take us to thoughts of harvest and large gatherings with the foods autumn provides. Time to get out winter clothing if you live in a four-season area. Time to dust off the recipe books for the upcoming holiday meals and desserts. Each prompt has a text prompt page, and also a picture-only prompt page. We always include a coloring page for children who may be in attendance.

November is full of gray - skies, branches, old withering leaves, and gardens prepared for next year.

Leaves underfoot? Who can resist "crunching" them! Leaf piles are irresistible to children, and sometimes adults. Walks are enjoyable when there are things to discover like colorful leaves, acorns, pine needles, and pinecones. It is probably going to be a mast year for acorns. I heard a discussion on NPR about the high numbers of acorns this fall.

Baking in the fall is fun with new apples, pumpkins, and other things that may be available. Can you imagine the aroma? Such fun to eat, as well.

Light snows that do not stay on the ground are lovely as it probably isn't too cold as yet. Can you catch a snowflake on your tongue?

Big family gatherings may be enjoyable, or not, depending on what a family is going through at this time. It will be my first Thanksgiving meal for a LO in memory care, and I am not really happy about the situation but hopefully, it won't be too sad.

As usual, there is a coloring page for the children included in the PDF.

This month's writing prompts are Halloween-based, as opposed to other October writing prompts on this blog. There are six writing prompts with text to help inspire writers, and eight picture-only writing prompt pages to print. There is one coloring page to be used as needed, for fast finishers or children "dragged along" to a writing group. The entire PDF is fifteen pages in length. Teachers or writing group leaders may select which pages they may want to use as fits their particular group's needs.

The text prompts are as follows:

Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Everyone faces times when they feel like an emotional mess or wreck. Emotions help writers create interest in a text piece, emotions in the characters, emotions in the reader, and even emotions in the writer. Going through or remembering tough times can help writers create real feelings to help engage readers, and of course, we have all experienced some difficult situations. some of the prompts have text beginnings, and some are pictures only for the writer to take whatever direction he or she wants.

We have probably all seen murder mysteries where a dead body is found in the woods by some innocent person. What if that happened to you? Has anything close to that ever happened to you? What would you think and do?

Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

If you have been in overwhelming situations, then you may realize how difficult it might be to know what to do. Thinking ahead might help you face such a difficult situation. But often life is messy, as the saying goes, and we really do not know what to do in every instance. We may be unprepared. What might be such a situation and what might you do to find help?

Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Anxiety and stress may make us act differently from usual. Has that ever happened to you? We cannot always think clearly and logically. After anxiety  builds, what might happen? Write a paragraph about such a time you or someone you know faced.

Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Oh, my. Some life events might make us think it is the end of the world (for us). What might such an event be? What could have happened to this person who is clearly in distress?

Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Pills are often in the news. You maybe know someone who overdosed or intentionally took too many pills. What goes on in the life of such a person so they just want to give up? Do you know resources for people who are threatening suicide? How might you help direct a person to helplines or associations that could help?
Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

This person is feeling unimportant. How might you cheer up such a person?

Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Crying can make us feel better. Weird, but true. If you can't cry, feelings are locked inside. What might this person be crying about? How might someone help her?

Fired? Being called to the principal's office? Waiting at the hospital for surgery to be over? Write your response to this image.

Traveling Abroad Writing Prompts for September 15, 2021 Freebie

Traveling! Are you a traveler? Have you traveled abroad? Do you have fond, surprising, terrible, or funny memories? These prompts might be for you. Again, six have a written prompt starter, and eight are picture-only. Many people could write an entire book about their travels, like Carolyn Howard-Johnson. She and her husband have been to about 80 different countries. Maybe you have, too, but hopefully, you will have at least some ideas for writing about traveling abroad.

Below are the picture prompts. Do any of these inspire writing? If a child attends your writing group, there is a picture for coloring to help behavior chemistries.

Sharing-with-writers-and-readers-Septemeber-2021-picture-only-travel-writing-prompts

Carolyn Howard-Johnson was on a cruise when the pandemic hit. Things took a turn for the "interesting" and she and her husband were interviewed by Paul C. Thornton for his book, Cruising Interrupted.  It tells the true story of what happened, and it was quite an ordeal. Maybe that happened to you, or even someone you know. If not, you can probably imagine what the experience might be like.

How about Shanghai? My daughter's trip there was an educational experience, too, although nothing as exciting as a pandemic happened. What a beautiful city! We have a free instant download A to Z Shanghai PowerPoint with her pictures on the Wise Owl Factory blog for anyone interested. Or it might inspire some memories for people who have been there.
Traveling Abroad Writing Prompts for September 15, 2021 Freebie

I have heard some people stick a pin in a map when blindfolded and then travel to the pinned area. I can't imagine doing that myself. This prompt is more of a "what if" story about someone who might try that approach. This would be a fiction prompt, I think.

Traveling Abroad Writing Prompts for September 15, 2021 Freebie

There are additional prompts to be found in the free PDF. The link is above. These prompts are used in different ways including quick writes, warm-ups, and end-of-writing group activities. Some groups share their writing by reading aloud, and some do not. Whatever works for your group!

Thank you for reading, Carolyn Wilhelm

March 2021 Writing Prompts Free Instant Download PDF

March 2021 Writing Prompts Free Instant Download PDF

March 2021 Writing Prompts Free Instant Download PDF

March brings some relief from winter in the northern states, and probably even in the southern states. We lived in Texas and the cold wind blew in January and February. We welcome March with open arms. Although in Minnesota some of the worst snowstorms happen in March and April, they end sooner and the snow melts faster than in previous months. Kite flying, International Woman's Day, International Poetry Day, St. Patrick's Day, The Ides of March, the spring equinox, and other events happen during the month. You'll need a poem in your pocket for poetry day (not to be confused with National Poetry Day in October), so select the poem prompt and be ready.

March 2021 Writing Prompts Free Instant Download PDF

Did you know Proofreading Day is in March? My father was a proofreader for the Minneapolis StarTribune before this event was named. If you know a proofreader, a thank you might be in order and it could be accomplished by selecting this prompt.

March 2021 Writing Prompts Free Instant Download PDF

Pi Day is on March 14th, which is celebrated in schools and math departments. Teachers buy and share pie in the breakroom. You didn't know about this important mathematical event? Now you do.

March 2021 Writing Prompts Free Instant Download PDF

Just because the image was selected for a "holiday" or special day does not mean the writing response has to be about the day. Pictures may be viewed in many different ways. We think of March as being windy and good for flying kites. Maybe this picture could be viewed as a prompt for a story about telling someone to go fly a kite.

March 2021 Writing Prompts Free Instant Download PDF

The Spring Equinox will be on March 20, 2021. We are all looking forward to hopefully a better life in 2021 and spring may help us start rounding the corner.

Writing Prompts Freebie for January 2021

Writing Prompts Freebie for January 2021

Writing Prompts Freebie for January 2021

Ah, a new year. It would be so nice if it didn't feel like the pandemic was still with us. We have hope in the form of vaccines. We have worries with new variations of the virus, also. It may feel a little like jumping from one cliff to another. Whatever, we must forge ahead and onward in our lives. Writers are still having a chance to write historical information for families, articles, or books.

Writing Prompts Freebie for January 2021

Winter can be beautiful. If you live in a northern climate or visit one, you know about the breathtaking beauty of trees and nature covered with snow. Really, until the snow becomes dirty from vehicle exhaust, it is great. The ephemeral nature of fresh snow must be caught for writing inspiration before the landscape changes.

Writing Prompts Freebie for January 2021

Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is definitely inspiring. Have you seen them? It is a true wonder of nature. During winter in northern latitudes viewing them takes some patience. We lived "up north" and were able to experience them several times. We had alerts that called our phone from an app, and would get up at 3 AM or whenever we got the call. Well, if we weren't too tired. Then, it was a chase to find the lights as we lived on the side of the Sawtooth Mountains that was shielded from the lights. We drove down the "mountain" (Minnesota's mountains are not very tall) to try to find a spot for viewing. Or we drove to a few spots we had noticed the local photographers used for taking their pictures. My pictures never turned out, but I knew I had seen the lights. It was always worth the trouble.

Writing Prompts Freebie for January 2021

Of course, you may live where snow is not a problem and are enjoying lovely weather and sunshine. Maybe you are lucky enough to travel to paradise and enjoy the warm sands of a beach. So your writing might not be about the cold winter.

Writing Prompts Freebie for January 2021

I hope you enjoy the prompts. As always, there are six pages with prompts and six without any text for writers who are inspired by just pictures. Pick out the page you want to work on. Perhaps if the resolutions prompt is selected, you may not want to share it with your writing group. This year, it may seem like enduring the pandemic is enough of a resolution!

Thank you for reading, Carolyn (the other Carolyn)
