Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Everyone faces times when they feel like an emotional mess or wreck. Emotions help writers create interest in a text piece, emotions in the characters, emotions in the reader, and even emotions in the writer. Going through or remembering tough times can help writers create real feelings to help engage readers, and of course, we have all experienced some difficult situations. some of the prompts have text beginnings, and some are pictures only for the writer to take whatever direction he or she wants.

We have probably all seen murder mysteries where a dead body is found in the woods by some innocent person. What if that happened to you? Has anything close to that ever happened to you? What would you think and do?

Emotional Wreck Writing Prompts Free PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

If you have been in overwhelming situations, then you may realize how difficult it might be to know what to do. Thinking ahead might help you face such a difficult situation. But often life is messy, as the saying goes, and we really do not know what to do in every instance. We may be unprepared. What might be such a situation and what might you do to find help?

Anxiety and stress may make us act differently from usual. Has that ever happened to you? We cannot always think clearly and logically. After anxiety  builds, what might happen? Write a paragraph about such a time you or someone you know faced.

Oh, my. Some life events might make us think it is the end of the world (for us). What might such an event be? What could have happened to this person who is clearly in distress?

Pills are often in the news. You maybe know someone who overdosed or intentionally took too many pills. What goes on in the life of such a person so they just want to give up? Do you know resources for people who are threatening suicide? How might you help direct a person to helplines or associations that could help?

This person is feeling unimportant. How might you cheer up such a person?

Crying can make us feel better. Weird, but true. If you can't cry, feelings are locked inside. What might this person be crying about? How might someone help her?

Fired? Being called to the principal's office? Waiting at the hospital for surgery to be over? Write your response to this image.

Mystery Writing Prompts PDF Instant Download for Writing Groups and Teachers

Mystery Writing Prompts PDF Instant Download for Writing Groups and Teachers

The other night my daughter was shocked when the doorbell rang during a thunderstorm. She could see the outline of a person against the backdrop of lightning. It was the police! Thunder! Lightning! Police! More lightning!

Although she was scared, she did answer the door. On a different evening, a friend was in a similar situation. Police were at her door, but she called 911 to verify it was the police. In some situations,  there may be a suspicious person in the neighborhood, or they are looking for information about a neighbor. The police do not explain outside the door. This could be a frightening experience.

Mysteries often begin with murder(s), detectives, and police. I wonder how some of the little towns in the murder mysteries series settings have anyone left living. I wonder if the shows may have to end for lack of possible victims! Not really, but this is a popular genre on television and in books. Romance is number one, and mysteries are second in popularity.

Mystery Writing Prompts PDF Instant Download for Writing Groups and Teachers

One of the prompts is, "the floor creaked from footsteps one floor above." Of course, this storyline may be taken in a different direction. It is up to the writer. This PDF is my usual, with several pages of pictures with text prompts and the same pictures without text. Writers can choose whether to use a text prompt, create their own stories just using one of the pictures, or write something else independently.

Mystery Writing Prompts PDF Instant Download for Writing Groups and Teachers

Detectives are usually included in mysteries as they are needed to follow clues and lead the reader to a possible conclusion. Red herring clues help with plot twists and surprises at the book's conclusion. Usually, one detective is in charge and disagrees with a younger one, and then the younger one proves he is right to the embarrassment of the one in charge, as in Endeavor by Masterpiece Theater. The younger detective is more handsome or beautiful, clever, smarter, and more insightful than the one who is about ready to retire. Ya know. So here is the dashing young man. Perhaps he is shown up by a female, like in Miss Scarlet and the Duke, also from Masterpiece Theater.

Mystery Writing Prompts PDF Instant Download for Writing Groups and Teachers

Police might knock on the door at night. Usually, detectives and others work to gather clues, which necessitates visiting houses and places of employment. This page might be part of a mystery or another genre altogether.
Mystery Writing Prompts PDF Instant Download for Writing Groups and Teachers

There are 16 pages of writing prompts and also one coloring page, as usual. Sometimes children are invited (perhaps being dragged along, kicking and screaming) to a writing class or group and need something to do.

Thank you for reading. I hope you find these prompts helpful!
Carolyn

Pictures as Inspiration for Writing Prompts

Pictures as Inspiration for Writing Prompts

Dr. Theodore Cohen suggests writing prompts should be pictures, not sentences. He likes to offer photos grouped around a theme, so writers have some choice. As a flash fiction par excellence author, he writes complete short stories from individual photographs. Please see an example of one of his many flash fiction books at this link on Amazon (the books are always free) Flash Fiction for Animal Lovers and Flash Fiction Stories of the Young
"Photos can provide great inspiration. (Writing groups or teachers) may want to start, or add to, collections of photographs of various things: people, animals, and automobiles. Almost anything can be used as a prompt. Perhaps a choice from a set of three photographs could be used to allow selecting of a 'topic' to accommodate ideas for an initial story."
Pictures as Inspiration for Writing Prompts

Here are some sources for finding good photos. I usually use photos from Pixabay in the monthly writing prompt post.  I found this list on Pixabay's Twitter page by @PriteshKiri, and also selected photos for this month's free instant PDF download. Of course, stories of any length may be written beginning with a picture. Maybe an entire book!

📷 unsplash.com 📷 pexels.com 📷 pixabay.com 📷 freeimages.com 📷 magdeleine.co 📷 lifeofpix.com 📷 picography.co 📷 stocksnap.io 📷 freephotos.cc 📷 pngtree.com 📷 burst.shopify.com 📷 duotone.shapefactory.co

One warning is that almost all free online sites have advertising. We are accustomed to such. However, it is easy to click on the most beautiful photos only to find out they are priced. Sometimes, free sites have discount codes for priced photo sites. Terms of use must be checked to see if the image is available for commercial use, which is often allowed. Some photos may be used on book covers, as well. Joining the site allows downloads of different sizes of images. Some sites invite users to upload their own files for sharing.

I read the Pixabay Twitter page (or I looked at it). They select the most stunning images for sharing with readers and writers. The home pages of many sites also have a selection of irresistible images. It is easy to start creating a collection for your writing group or class.

For instance, Deb Spence's image was selected for April 9th, 2023. This could inspire a story regarding a family heirloom of silver, decluttering, or even a garage sale.

Image by Deb Spence shared to the Pixabay page

Sometimes I look at an image and wonder what Cohen would write? It could be a war story beginning with that photo. Here is another selected to be shared by Pixabay and entitled "An Open Book" by Jess Bailey Design. It is a lovely image to inspire an anniversary or Valentine's writing piece. Some writers may chose to write poetry.

Pixabay has everything: houses, people, activities, seasons, landscapes, art, famous people, Star Wars, and whatever you might imagine. If a search comes up with nothing, try using a different term. For hat, here is a striking photo by 1643606.

Sometimes we notice these stock images on different sites for different purposes. It is annoying when we recognize free images. Try not even looking at the first page of results to search further to find images used less often. Different sizes of downloads are available on Pixabay, and select the one that fits the purpose. Do give credit when possible. According to Pixabay, they have:

Over 2.5 million+ high quality stock images, videos and music shared by our talented community.

It's in the Cards Writing Prompt Free PDF Download

It's in the Cards Writing Prompt Free PDF Download

For February 15, 2023, we have writing prompts revolving around the theme of cards. Each of the six prompts has a text and also a picture-only writing page. A generic writing page is included for those with their own ideas. Of course, coloring pages are included in the case of younger visitors to the writing group or class.

We have all heard of someone with something up a sleeve, so this prompt might be about an actual card or just an idea that someone springs on unsuspecting people. What do you think of when you see this picture? There are many ways to play tricks. This saying might mean to have secret plans or ideas. Some group members might select this page for their quick write, while others will look further.

The word card might have another meaning, such as a credit card. Money pockets went out long ago for most people, but someone might still wear such a thing. What could possibly go wrong?

Few among us haven't heard the expression, "It's just a game." Some writers might be inspired by this saying to begin writing.

There has even been a TV show entitled, "House of Cards." This image may help a few writers be inspired.

There are more prompts, both with and without text, for writers and students to consider.

Thank you for reading, Carolyn Wilhelm

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

Our sister site is The New Book Review, and did you know we welcome book reviews by our readers? We do, even for previously published reviews with permission, unless you wrote it yourself. So this month, we are inviting you to submit to our blog and see your book review online.

The free PDF download would be useful for writing practice for groups or classes that may wish to see their work online. Of course, reviewers need to be over 13 years old in most cases.

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

Instead of writing a book report, groups might work on writing reviews for publication on sites such as The New Book Book Review, Amazon, Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, Public Libraries, or other sites that accept book reviews.  The free instant download PDF is at this link.  For those who prefer editable forms to fill in and then email to The New Book Review, please use this editable submission form

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

The form for submitting to The New Book Review to be published on our site is two pages and is the same as what is asked on the site page explaining the process.  Page one asks for the book title, subtitle, author name, and so on. This is an image of the first page.

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

The second page asks for more information so we can publish a full book review including information about the reviewer as well as the author, and where the book may be published.

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

There is also a general review that may be used on other sites. Make several copies of the page if writers would like to use this one. Group leaders have the option of which pages to use and how many copies to make of the pages, of course.

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

More information and also information about receiving free books is available on the site.

Writing Prompts of the Month for Publishing Book Reviews

And this is how the editable form looks. Type in the blue spaces and then save. Again, the information at this link explains the process

We hope to publish your reviews soon!

Movie Review Writing Prompts PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Movie Review Writing Prompts PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Movie reviews might be good writing practice for either groups or classrooms, whether or not they are actually posted. Maybe extra credit if it is posted? It is always helpful when people tell what they liked and cover one critical point for other potential film viewers. This free PDF is open-ended so writers may select a film or just the genre to review. Writers may add specific titles or a genre, then assign a star value. Writing responses might be timed or not, and shared or not.

Movie Review Writing Prompts PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

What made me think of this idea? Oh, we received such sad news about a friend's daughter who has been fighting cancer for a long time and is spending her days in bed. She watches movies part of each day and even continues to write movie reviews. Being taken care of well, it is good she has such a hobby to occupy her time. I'm sure others may have similar hobbies, but this story today hit especially hard during the holiday season. I wish everyone was well, happy, and secure in housing/food/health. But of course, that is not probably true. It sure would be nice.

Science Fiction readers might enjoy using this page, either to write about a specific title or just the genre. Tell us what you really think!
Movie Review Writing Prompts PDF for Writing Groups and Teachers

Watching Hallmark movies in December? The guy from the city is old news when the charming small-town guy in a flannel shirt is helping everyone and is ever so romantic. Think of a certain film or write about romance movies in general. How many stars?

Some people like horror or scary movies. If so, this picture prompt might be just the thing to get the creative juices flowing.

Do you know of a just really good movie that you can't stop thinking about? So enjoyable and captivating? This page might be used for such a title.

Travel or nights out on the town type films might be rated with this page.

Well, sometimes we all wait patiently through a show another person likes. Has this happened to you? This page might be a good one for writing about such events.

Documentaries are good for people who want to relive history or have some understanding of the topic before watching. Some people prefer nonfiction, are you one?

Ghost story films can be in a different category than horror as they may encompass the supernatural. People probably have definite opinions on this category.
