Goal Gal Deb Eckerling Kicks Off National Journaling Week

Journaling for Decision Making
and Problem Solving

By Debra Eckerling, author and Goal Chat Gal

April is National Journaling Month.

When people think of journaling, they typically think of the traditional use: Writing down what’s going on in your life – your actions, activities, and emotions - for tracking, reflection, and healing.

One of my favorite ways to use a journal is for decision-making and problem-solving. .

From career and partnership opportunities to plot and character development, journaling helps you get those ideas out of your head and onto the page, so you can look at things objectively and make plans.

Professionally, do you need to decide:

● Between job offers?
● Whether a joint venture is a fit for your business?
● If you should take on a particular client?

Creatively, do you need some insight into:

● Plotting options
● Character arcs and traits
● Working through a scene, conflict, or conversation

To gain clarity, try my Directed Journaling technique. Directed journaling is stream-of-consciousness writing spurts, focused on a specific theme, issue, or problem.

Here’s how Directed Journaling works:

In your electronic calendar, schedule between three and five 15-minute sessions over a few days. Be sure to set a reminder.

When you get the alert for your appointment, set a timer for 15 minutes, and start writing. Note: While there are benefits to writing by hand, if you are more likely to complete the process by typing on a computer, go for it!

During each journaling session, focus on the question, decision, or challenge at hand. When you do your journaling, think outside the box. Be as logical and as extreme as possible. Your journal rants are for your eyes only. And don’t worry about repeating yourself. The trick is to get everything out of your head and onto the page.

Here’s the Trick

Do not read any of these journal entries until you have done the brainstorming several times.

Once you have exhausted your thoughts on the subject, then you may read the journal entries.

As you go through them, make a note of the ideas you repeat – those are what you are most drawn to. You may also come up with solutions that seem to come from left-field. That’s what happens during this process.

Final Thoughts

Journaling enables you to open yourself up to all possibilities and look at them objectively - whether it’s for a creative or professional venture. As a result, you are likely to come up with a successful solution, comfortable decision, or feasible plan that sets you up for success.

An Online Conference Returns to Benefit Authors

I presented for this writer's conference for years and it is back! It's so nice to have a respected conference online--especially for those who can't travel or can't afford to travel. Regardless of the name, authors of any religion or none will benefit. I have always believed that we are all in this together and sharing information--industry to industry--genre to genre--can be very beneficial to our writing careers.  Here is a letter directly from the conference planners to help you with details and to help spread the word if you wish.

Dear Friends,

The Catholic Writers Guild is again holding its annual online conference Sept 20-22, with pitch sessions Sept 23-26. This is an awesome opportunity to learn from successful authors and marketers, network, and even speak with publishers – all from the comfort of your own home.

Would you be willing to spread the word to your readers via your blog? Maybe just use the link to this blog.   To learn more go to https://catholicwritersguild.org/cwco-workshops-and-schedule for the schedule and list of presentations. Here are a few highlights:

·     3 Pre-launch Strategies for Every Author by Sarah Reinhard
·     1000 Ideas for Articles: Finding Inspiration When You're Dry by Sherry Antonetti
·     Business Bootcamp for Authors by Cathy Gilmore
·     How to Create a Storyboard by Karen Kelly Boyce
·     How to Create Memorable Characters by Michelle Buckman
·     Indie Publishing by Jane Lebak
·     Legal Issues for Writers by Anthony Kolenc
·      Thematic Grace: Stories without Sermons by Karen Ullo

In addition, we have some great deals from our sponsors:
·     IngramSpark (free title setup)
·     Final Draft (30% off)
·     Book Design Templates (20% off)
·     Duotrope (1 month free)

Registration closes September 16.

Every year we hear back from authors who finished a book, started a project, or got a publishing contract thanks to the Catholic Writers' Conference Online. Plus, people make contacts and good friends. It's a terrific opportunity, especially for those who can't afford to attend a live conference," says Fabian.

This year’s conference is sponsored by Duotrope and First Draft, who are offering deals to attendees. Duotrope offers an extensive, searchable database of current fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and visual art markets, while Final Draft is the industry standard in screenwriting software. People can learn more about these sponsors and thier offerings to conference attendees at https://catholicwritersguild.org/online-conference.

For more information about the Catholic Writers Guild, visit www.catholicwritersguild.org.

Thank you and God bless,
Karina Fabian
CWCO Conference Coordinator

The winner of each category will receive $1,500 in cash, a marketing analysis and one-hour phone consultation with Carolyn Howard-Johnson, a $300 credit at BookBaby, and 3 free ads in the Winning Writers newsletter (a $450 value). Two honorable mentions in each category will receive $250. Great Writers' Courses--Frugally

I have been intrigued by a new product advertised in magazines like National Geographic, Time, Archaeology and the like. It is a series of courses offered by http://TheGreatCourses.com. All are taught by accredited college or university instructors—mostly colleges we would be familiar with. Their ads always publish a complete list of the individual lecture titles and give the name of the professor. These programs remind me of the ones I took a long time ago; we called them home study courses and everything was done by mail. I can remember typing up my lessons on a typewriter, folding them, and stuffing them into an envelope, licking it, and licking the stamps. Yes! Licking!

This month the ad featured a course called “Writing Creative Nonfiction.”  I haven’t bought it—yet. The CD course is $49.95 and the DVD is $69.95, so they’re frugal enough. Lots more frugal that most courses from accredited universities. The teacher for this one is a full professor from Colby College. And the name of one of the lectures: “Writing the Gutter—How to Not Tell a Story” caught my attention. I also thought the one called “How To Not Have People Hate You” might intrigue writers who worry—a lot—about that! Perhaps I would pick up some tips for the presentations I do for writers' conferences.

So, what’s keeping me from ordering the course? So, what is holding me back? Time. I’m still in the final throes of writing the third full book in the HowToDoItFrugally Series. It is How To Get Great Book Reviews Frugally and Ethically: The ins and outs of using free reviews to build and sustain a writing career to be released this fall. I’m through the fun part and am struggling with the Index. So maybe I need a break? What do you think?

BTW, if you are interested in checking this course out, go to http://TheGreatCourses.com/5TME. There may be some other fantastic ones that would interest you. The range of topics that would interest creative people is huge. And, if you buy one, let me know what you think, will you?
