So proud to have the opportunity to work with https://WinningWriters.com.  This is a first for me, but it dawns on me that I have never shared with my visitors and subscribers the kind of information--all excellent and vetted resources--in their newsletter.  I highly recommend the letter and site for anyone who is interested in contests, all of them thoroughly vetted.  Ditto for the rare author-related ads they send out like this one they did for me. And look at that special price today on the audio version of “The Great First Impression Book Proposal!”

"'This is a really smart proposal,' was one comment from an agent who went on to sell my nonfiction book to a publisher. The 'smartest' thing about it? I used Carolyn's guide to write it!"
—Treacy Colbert, medical writer and author of End Your Menopause Misery

"I just finished reading The Great First Impression Book ProposalI like your style and encouragement. I was a bit intimidated about finishing my book proposal. I was thinking it had to be stiff and boring. I even have dialogue in it. I thought I'd have to cut it out. Now, I'll probably leave it in."
—Wanza Leftwich, author, blogger

"I love [The Great First Impression Book Proposal]! My husband was amazed at all the info crammed into this short book. You could have charged a lot more. I just re-vamped my proposal to follow the guidelines in it for my latest book."
—Myrna Lou, palmist, psychic, author

"Marketing is never easy...Well, it might be if you follow the easy steps Carolyn Howard-Johnson offers up in The Great First Impression Book Proposal: Everything You Need to Know About Selling Your Book in Thirty Minutes or Less. Howard-Johnson's bulleted lists are superior. They're easy to understand, easy to implement, and even easier to read. (She means it when she says thirty minutes or less). She gives us even more: A list of other resources on book proposals. I will recommend this book to all of our authors and potential authors at Ladybug Press."

A Little Humor Anyone? It's My Holiday Gift for Writers

I just had to share this resource with my #SharingwithWriters visitors and subscribers. It's one of  my favorite writers' conferences of all time (time that it is getting longer and longer with more and more #writersconferences to choose from!). A writers conference for humorists? you are thinking? There is nothing like a sprinkle of humor.  Since I presented at this conference (twice now!), I use humor in more and more unexpected places. Subject lines (can you imaging how boring subject lines can get for feature editors and other gatekeepers that writers send emails to?), in query letters, and my how-to books for writers (you know you've thought you'd like to read one but dread the idea of a whole book full of bullets and advice, but really. Read my reviews. Every once in a while someone mentions that a little humor keeps them going!).  It's not LOL-funny stuff, but when I can work it in, it serves to set even the driest documents apart and give me an edge. You'll even find a humorous poem or two in "Blooming Red," the holiday chapbook I wrote with Aussie Magdalena Ball. So, after this long introduction, here is a little holiday gift (and resource!) for you!

PS: My writing friend Dr. Bob Rich even uses humor in most of his biographies!

It's Erma Time on the Dayton Riviera!
Registration Opens Dec. 9 for In-Person and Virtual Experiences

The Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, slated for March 24-26, 2022, on the University of Dayton's campus, will feature New York Times’ bestselling authors, Saturday Night Livelegends, Emmy Award winners, Thurber Prize winners, a Moth GrandSLAM winner, the author of the Bible (The New Comedy Bible, that is), screenwriters and a slew of celebrated comedians and authors. The slate includes an amazing 11 former keynoters. With her special blend of grace and humor, stand-up comedian Leighann Lord will emcee.

Registration for the in-person workshop* opens at noon (EST) on Thursday, Dec. 9. A link will be posted that morning and shared via our e-newsletter. Fee: $499, which includes keynotes, workshops, meals and full access to a *virtual* package of the keynote talks and the always-entertaining and educational Pitchapalooza. You're invited to relive the Erma experience long after the workshop ends.

For those interested in the virtual option only, the registration fee is $79. From the comfort of your home (think: pajamas!), you can enjoy the keynote talks and Pitchapalooza in real time, participate in a live chat with other writers joining virtually or tap back in later at your convenience.

For both options, expect to laugh, learn and network with a supportive writing community.

Read more about the 2022 keynoters and faculty as well as the workshop sessions. New this year: sessions such as "Erma would KILL on TikTok — a Writer's Guide to Social Media Videos" and "When Humor Goes, There Goes Civilization: How to Use Your Gifts to Change the World (and have a laugh along the way)."

If you're looking for a creative (and fun) pilgrimage, *this* is the one.

*Masks are required indoors for all attendees, regardless of vaccination status. While proof of vaccination to attend is not mandatory, vaccination is highly encouraged. The vast majority of faculty, staff and students are vaccinated at the University of Dayton.

*Welcome to the*

Author Entrepreneurship Magazine
by Beth Barany, and the creative team at Barany Consulting
Welcome to the Spring 2013 issue of the Author Entrepreneurship Magazine!
Let's Get Together!

Thanks for reading! I created this magazine to help authors – especially shy, introverted novelists – create sustainable, successful, and enjoyable careers.

Instead of a March issue, this is our Spring 2013 issue. I'm moving the magazine to quarterly, starting with this issue, because my fiction, and that of my husband's (our graphic designer) is taking up more of our time. Yippee!

But it wasn't always this way. I used to feel that my writing competed with my business of coaching writers, but now I've come to realize that taking care of myself, that is working on my fiction regularly, is top priority. When I do take really good care of myself, my business flows. That was my big Aha recently.

What's your big Aha around your author career? Please share it at our blog: www.authorentrepreneurship.com. Thanks for joining us on this wonderful author entrepreneur's adventure that we share.

PS. Because I love to create circles of support, I've just launched with Catharine Bramkamp an informal support group for Writing Coaches who write fiction. If you'd like to join us because you'd like to give and get support, and you too are a writing coach who writes fiction, then request to join our Facebook Group here: Coffee Clatch: Virtual Cafe for Writing Coaches. ("Clatch" from "klatch", and "coffee klatch", a casual social gathering for coffee and conversation. From the German. I could have sworn it was Yiddish!)

Contact us is you have questions or topics you'd like us to cover in future issues.

With that mission I publish this magazine as a service to all authors, my colleagues and new friends.

Our magazine is for You:

Writers' Resources: Finding Influencers Who Need Your Expertise

My SharingwithWriters newsletter includes how-to articles, regular features like "Opportunities," "Thank Yous" (which usually link to blog posts or other sites that will help your writing career), and "Accessible Contests to Help Build Your Platform."  But it's the short tips that most people say they love most. If you'd like to receive that letter in your mailbox, send an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE in the subject line to HoJoNews@aol.com and I'll do it for you.

Here is a sample of a longer tip or how-to article that I sometimes include in the letter, too.

Getting Leads for Great Promo Ops: You can get lots of publicity from supplying reporters with quotes or information to support or refute their premises. But how can you reach the ones writing on a topic related to your book or expertise?  A service called HARO at http://helpareporterout.com is very popular. They send you e-mails with requests from reporters, radio and TV hosts, and even other authors researching books. In each of their e-mails is a list of these needs, and each has a live link to the person who has a need. Each is a little like a classified ad.
When you see a link with a subject line that's related to any of the topics in your book, you send them a note. Quickly outline your expertise and then add whatever you think might entice them to call you for an interview or other need they may have. I try to give them enough that they may not have to call or e-mail me. That fits with my theory that the easier you make it for an editor to use your material, the more likely it is they'll use you over someone else. It may take you a while to perfect your technique.
If they end up quoting you, they should include a mention of your book and preferably a link. Even if the reporter, producer, or host doesn't contact you or use the information or anecdote that you provide,  you get your name, book title, link, and expertise out there to people who are influencers every time you answer one of these requests. The downside is that you will get quite a few e-mails from your subscription. The upside is that  you could land anything from an appearance on a TV show to a quote from you (the expert!) in Newsweek.

Carolyn and Book 'Em Writers Conference Welcome New Writers to the World

Dear New Baby Huneycutt and Others Born in 2012:

If you can possibly arrange it, become a writer.

You are the ones who can save our race from prejudice, poorly written tech manuals, screenplays that bore and play to the lowest common denominator, and about anything else that plagues mankind today.

Moreover, the world is spiraling so fast around the sun and traveling so quickly as the universe moves toward its eventual demise, that dark matter, wormholes, and other scary entities will have been conquered. I visualize a publishing world devoid of the problems we have today. That means writing will be full of the same joys (maybe others, too!) as those we have in 2012, but it will have few, if any, of the problems. These are my predictions:

  • Writers, publishers, agents—even educators—will have moved beyond petty bigotries like judging books by their covers or the presses (or lack of them) that books are published on.
  • E-readers of all kinds will have put aside petty competitive differences and begun to operate on one system. That means what you publish—whatever it is—need only be published once with one format. Your choice. Easily chosen with a click. Maybe not a click, but a nod of your head or merely a wish.
  • Hackers will have disappeared. They will have come to understand that a cooperative world is a better one. Instead they will put their skills to work helping those who can't afford their talents.
  • That disease that plagues writers called "block" will have disappeared because everyone will have read Chapter One in The Frugal Book Promoter (http://budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo) that includes ideas to defeat worries about plagiarism, swiping others' work, being sued, worries about success, rejection, or the idea that you, young writer, are not enough. Oh, yes. You'll also overcome the fear of marketing. See the next bullet.
  • Young people will have been raised and educated to have the confidence necessary to market their own work without fear of ridicule for doing so. Words like "shameless" will never be seen paired with "promotion" or "marketing" because there will be no reason to do so. They'll see that selling is not a dirty word but the process of matching those who will benefit from what we do to the product we offer.
  • The Web (or something else!) will be so viral that we writers will easily be able to reach all those who will benefit from our books, including that delightful benefit—entertainment. Again. One click. Or merely a wish.
  • Illiteracy will have been overcome. Instead of reading less, people will read more. Our education processes will be so perfected that no one will consider it desirable to pretend they don't understand or appreciate anything from poetry to philosophy to quantum mechanics.
  • Our computers (or other writing tools) will have perfected methods for spelling, grammar, and formatting. Tools that always work. Having said that, no writer will lack the knowledge necessary to spot a mistake on the rare occasion the computers make a booboo.
  • And writers (well, OK, maybe others, too!) will live an additional generation to allow us time to fully develop skills in at least three genres. That way we can explore, perfect, and draw from each to apply to the next.

Oh, the passion. Oh, the joy!

New York Times Starts Charging for Access

Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr announced that The New York Times introduced digital subscriptions. He says, “It’s an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in The Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform. The change will primarily affect those who are heavy consumers of the content on our Web site and on mobile applications.”

I started my writing career as a journalist and I believe that freedom of speech coupled with strong teams of journalists keep the USA and other nations with free speech policies strong—and honest. Though there is a temptation to want what we’ve been getting free to stay free. Many of use TNYT for research. Still, there is a danger in being shortsighted.  It is hard to see our precious free access limited but I believe those of us who use resources like The Times do not want to see what it offers deteriorate. And, we all know that the world of journalism is changing.

Sulzberg explains, “If you are a home delivery subscriber of The New York Times, you will continue to have full and free access to our news, information, opinion and the rest of our rich offerings on your computer, smartphone, and tablet. International Herald Tribune subscribers will also receive free access to NYTimes.com.

If you are not a home delivery subscriber, you will have free access up to a defined reading limit [twenty articles a month]. If you exceed that limit, you will be asked to become a digital subscriber.

For more information, go to nytimes.com/digitalfaq.
