A Little Humor Anyone? It's My Holiday Gift for Writers

I just had to share this resource with my #SharingwithWriters visitors and subscribers. It's one of  my favorite writers' conferences of all time (time that it is getting longer and longer with more and more #writersconferences to choose from!). A writers conference for humorists? you are thinking? There is nothing like a sprinkle of humor.  Since I presented at this conference (twice now!), I use humor in more and more unexpected places. Subject lines (can you imaging how boring subject lines can get for feature editors and other gatekeepers that writers send emails to?), in query letters, and my how-to books for writers (you know you've thought you'd like to read one but dread the idea of a whole book full of bullets and advice, but really. Read my reviews. Every once in a while someone mentions that a little humor keeps them going!).  It's not LOL-funny stuff, but when I can work it in, it serves to set even the driest documents apart and give me an edge. You'll even find a humorous poem or two in "Blooming Red," the holiday chapbook I wrote with Aussie Magdalena Ball. So, after this long introduction, here is a little holiday gift (and resource!) for you!

PS: My writing friend Dr. Bob Rich even uses humor in most of his biographies!

It's Erma Time on the Dayton Riviera!
Registration Opens Dec. 9 for In-Person and Virtual Experiences

The Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, slated for March 24-26, 2022, on the University of Dayton's campus, will feature New York Times’ bestselling authors, Saturday Night Livelegends, Emmy Award winners, Thurber Prize winners, a Moth GrandSLAM winner, the author of the Bible (The New Comedy Bible, that is), screenwriters and a slew of celebrated comedians and authors. The slate includes an amazing 11 former keynoters. With her special blend of grace and humor, stand-up comedian Leighann Lord will emcee.

Registration for the in-person workshop* opens at noon (EST) on Thursday, Dec. 9. A link will be posted that morning and shared via our e-newsletter. Fee: $499, which includes keynotes, workshops, meals and full access to a *virtual* package of the keynote talks and the always-entertaining and educational Pitchapalooza. You're invited to relive the Erma experience long after the workshop ends.

For those interested in the virtual option only, the registration fee is $79. From the comfort of your home (think: pajamas!), you can enjoy the keynote talks and Pitchapalooza in real time, participate in a live chat with other writers joining virtually or tap back in later at your convenience.

For both options, expect to laugh, learn and network with a supportive writing community.

Read more about the 2022 keynoters and faculty as well as the workshop sessions. New this year: sessions such as "Erma would KILL on TikTok — a Writer's Guide to Social Media Videos" and "When Humor Goes, There Goes Civilization: How to Use Your Gifts to Change the World (and have a laugh along the way)."

If you're looking for a creative (and fun) pilgrimage, *this* is the one.

*Masks are required indoors for all attendees, regardless of vaccination status. While proof of vaccination to attend is not mandatory, vaccination is highly encouraged. The vast majority of faculty, staff and students are vaccinated at the University of Dayton.

Your Career, Your Fun: An Off-the-Beaten Path Writers Conference

WATCH THIS SPACE FOR CORONAVIRIS UPDATES

In The Frugal Book Promoter, I suggest combining a Writers' Conference and travel to keep a little spice in the lives of authors who spend lots of solitary time behind a computer and reduce taxes (along with lots of ways to make writers' conferences more productive for writers!)  I will be presenting (see the details below) and plan to do use that. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan! Really!! Maybe combine it with a cruise of the Great Lakes!

But now is the time to circle your calendar (June 6) and start making plans for a career-boosting event and some fun. I would love to see in Michigan!  Here is some basic information and a link for learning more.

The 21st annual Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association (UPPAA) Spring Conference will be held June 6th 2020 at the Olson Library on the campus of Northern Michigan University, Marquette Michigan.  Attendance is free for UPPAA members and $50 for non-members.  The Spring Conference will be preceded by a pre-conference Fiction Writing Workshop hosted by Red Ore Writers.

Authors who attend will learn best practices for writing, marketing, and selling their work from a broad selection of industry professionals.  This year's special topics include: romance writing, children's picture books, social media marketing, and writing/researching your historical fiction/non-fiction books. Our keynote speaker is Carolyn Howard-Johnson who will present "Your Frugal Book Launch:  The first 100 days to success".  Updates will be posted at www.UPPAA.org.

What Learning from Fellow Authors: What Authors Did Right . . .What Authors Did Wrong

It won't be long! I'm hoping visitors and subscribers to SharingwithWriters will check this writers' conference in Oxnard out. It's in Sunny California. At a resort. On the beach.  What better way to start November out before the holiday rush is upon you!

I am sending you a special invitation to join me on Saturday, Nov. 2, for a three-hour workshop. It's about how to get a book off to its best start--or keep it alive!  Or to relaunch it.  The web is our friend. With the right tools, we can keep our books alive for a long, long, LONG time--or use them to to move our careers forward--help keep those next books coming (and on top!). You'll also learn to build a media kit and use it as your forever go-to for the promotional materials you'll use every day. It can be your major time saver! I bring the bricks and mortar for your UN-virtual, hands-on kit!

Today I'm sharing one of the featured panels.  You'll love it. I have followed the trajectory of Patricia Fry's Kept Cat series, and believe me she has a few secrets to share!

If you are considering self-publishing, this is a must-attend panel.

TOOLS — SKILLS — RESOURCES
Delivering the information you need to succeed in publishing
Three self-published authors recounts what they did right and wrong, how they found resources who helped them, and what were the most important lessons they learned bringing their books to life.
From the left, Kimberly Davis Basso, Patricia Fry, and Ivor Davis.
Want to learn the brutal truth about self-publishing? No punches pulled?

There is no magic self-publishing fairy who will come, take your manuscript, edit it, design it, turn it into a book, and put it up on Amazon. And then, MOST IMPORTANT, promote it, so people buy the book.

All three of our panelists have gone through the uphill battle to see their book come to life and sell.

And they have met with success, but it took time, lots of effort on their part, and a good deal of cash. You may have written the greatest book on the face of the earth--but you must spend to spread the word. Publishing is a business.

Some of the things the panelists will cover are from their personal experience:
  • Authors need to know: What are my publishing options and the pros and cons of each.
  • How to determine the best publishing option for your book. Not every publishing option is right for every book and every author.
  • No matter which option you choose, the author is responsible for promoting his own book—even if you go with a traditional publisher.
  • What are your marketing options?
  • How do you find marketing resources?

If the publishing process was a pie chart for the time and efforts spent by an author, the percentages are something like this:
  • 35% writing and revisions (over and over)
  • 10% on editing phases (there are more than one)
  • 5% on the design, layout, and production of the book
  • 50% marketing and promoting the book – on Amazon, on social media, via your website, book signings, blogs, and more for at least 6 months after release.
Learn how these three writers embraced self-publishing and succeeded.

If you are considering self-publishing, this is a must-attend panel.
If you can't spend a whole day or the weekend,
individual session passes on sale nlow.

Meet Agents Who Can Make Your Screen Dreams Come True

Ohhh, I love conferences that feature input from agents.  So, though I have featured information on this conference before (use the search engine feature to find those posts because they each focus on a different aspect of this conference), I thought I'd let post once again because this one focus not only on agents, but agents with an interest and contacts for media other than print--like the big screen. (-:

Of course, I still hope to meet you for my workshop on Nov. 2nd. There are lots of ways to launch both new and old books, keep them alive as it were.  Screen is one of those ways.

The 805 Writers Conference
TOOLS — SKILLS — RESOURCES
Delivering the information you need to succeed in publishing
Content for the many streaming outlets is driving book sales, both old and new. Look at Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, or even better George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones. Both were turned into a blockbuster series. And like with Martin, it wasn’t a brand-new book but a well-crafted tale from a master storyteller.

Four of the producers on the BOOKS TO SCREEN panel at the upcoming 805 Writers Conference are looking for great stories with complex characters and an exciting way of looking at life. They can be fiction or memoir, just as long as you have a story to tell. An adventure, dramatic plot, or an interesting experience examined. One book can be turned into a mini-series, the HOTTEST property right now for Amazon, HBO, HULU, and NetFlix to purchase.

The five agents on the LITERARY AGENT Panel are looking for stories that can sell across genres, are fantasy, memoirs, mysteries, and the top-selling romance. Reading is segmented today, and publishers have slots to fill with stories that can attract specific audiences who buy books. And two of the agents also want manuscripts that can become streaming series.

PLUS, four agents will hear your pitch for your book at AGENT 1 on 1.

But you have to be a conference attendee to pitch. Plus, two agents will be holding sessions on HOW TO PITCH YOUR BOOK and HOW TO WRITE A 21ST  CENTURY QUIRY LETTER. Both are skills you need to move your writing career forward.

Register now.

Meet the people who may help your dreams come true.
