The Only Event I Recommend for Book Display without the Presence of the Author

Those of you who have hung out with me for a while know I recommend this even for display of books when the author can’t be present  based on its very low price and the value-added benefits it offers like networking. So your book gets seen--perhaps in a region where your get very little or no “in person” exposure, then it provides their AuthorsForAuthors group on Facebook where you get to post a little promotion and thank and anything else that might interests the group. You get an image of your book on display rather like this one --I can’t remember the year because I forgot to date it and I have at least a dozen or more them. They usually use book stands, too. One of their members writes a newsletter for authors in that region and if you put him on your media list, he’ll probably use your news even in you live in the Upper Peninsula!  Hi, guys! So have at it.  What do you have to lose but a few minutes to get to know the director of the even, Valerie Allen, $5. per book, and the cost of sending her your display stuff including bookmarks and/or business cards or even a stack of sell sheets! And Valerie--smart promoter than she is--has even featured my HowToDoItFrugally Series of books for writers in one of her presentations!

Valerie Allen Shares Her Serendipitous Marketing Ideas

Serendipitous Marketing

Today's Guest Blogger Is

Valerie Allen

Today's guest blogger hard at work
at an Authors for Authors Writers Conference

If you are an author, you are also in the retail business. Most writers do not view marketing as their super power. Many consider marketing and sales, the bane of their writing life. Perhaps, but it is a necessary evil that comes with the territory.

If you break out in a rash at the thought of speaking to others about your writing, understand you must tell to sell. Keep in mind, advertising is paid for, promotion is prayed for. I often tell writers to have their “marketing brain in networking mode” at all times and the most unexpected things can happen.

Here is a recent experience I had that makes my point. I am a writer, a psychologist, a college instructor, an event planner for authors and book events, and Director of Authors for Authors (AuthorsForAuthors.com). I am a very busy person (as most of us are!)

I came across a lady, Patty Wolf, who was retired and was offering her services as a “personal assistant.” Her list of tasks included data entry, mail outs, phone registrations, etc. Wow! This woman seemed like a dream come true to help with my never-ending “to do” list. I contacted her and we met at my office to discuss what I needed and things where she felt she could be of help.

In the course of getting to know one another, it turned out that Patty Wolf and her husband, Jeff, own and publish, “The Pet Gazette.” This is a FREE newspaper, with an online edition. They focus on saving animals and encourage people to adopt pets from shelters. What a great mission!

My marketing brain kicked into gear. How could I help Patty and Jeff get more online attention for their cause and help my authors with their books? We did some brainstorming and came up with a “Pets and Books” section to their online edition. If it went well, she offered to showcase our authors in the print edition. How did this work out? Very well, I'd say. Go to PetGazette-Pets.com and see for yourself. Let me know what you think. (VAllenWriter@gmail.com)

Did I know this would be the outcome of finding a 'personal assistant' for my business in the world of mental health services? Absolutely not! However, by keeping my writer brain going strong, and always seeking promotional opportunities, this serendipitous marketing seemed to come out of nowhere. No, not really; I don't think so. This was not just the “Luck of the Irish.” My belief is the harder I work, the luckier I get! This is what happens when writers realize they are in the retail business. They need to find opportunities everywhere they look. They must tell to sell.

Valerie Allen Announces November Book Sales Opps for Writers Everywhere!

Just passing along a resource my husband and I have used for years.  It's this Book Fair's display service. I remember that I advise against this kind of thing in my #TheFrugalBookPromoter, but this one is so reasonably priced ($5.00!) and Authors for Authors has some value-added services; they send a picture of your display to use in your own promotion (see the photo below)!  They send a list of your fellow book promoters to aid in networking efforts.  They can be relied on and I have actually seen specific results from having my book there! That is a rarity for shows where the author or publisher are not present to chat up the book.  There is more information on their website at  AuthorsForAuthors.com

Here is the basic info:

Valerie Allen Shares Path to Short Story Success

Who Loves Short Shorts?

by Valerie Allen,

If you like to read and/or write short stories welcome to the “McQuick” world of modern times. In today's world we tend to want all things, our way, ten minutes ago! Reading an interesting story used to be a long and leisurely break from the hustle and bustle of daily demands or an interesting escape from the routine and mundane events of everyday living.

Now we can listen to books as we multitask. We can also sneak away for a few minutes to read a short story. Stories can be humorous or poignant. Tales can be under 1000 words, better known as flash fiction, or they can be the more typical short story of 1000 to 5000 words.

It takes a special skill to create interesting characters, define a place, develop a plot, and tell a good story in only a few words. If you've dabbled with writing the short story and feel you have a talent for it, the big question is how and where to connect with readers.

Over the course time, with many trial and error attempts, I have found these marketing strategies to be most successful.

1. Research the many magazines, newspapers, and online venues seeking short stories to attract hurried readers or fill in small spaces in their publications. Submit to all of them within their guidelines. Eventually you will strike gold! Narrtive Magazine, Electric Literature, One Story, Joyland Magazine, The First Line, Crazyhorse, Ploughshares, The Atlantic, and others.

2. Publish your single short story on Amazon.com via KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) as an ebook. I charge .99 cents and earn a 35% royalty. This is not a get rich quick opportunity but you will sell in quantity and pick up many readers. I have been able to create a strong following with this idea. You can see my books and short stories at Amazon.com/author/valerieallen

3. Every week have an online post featuring one of your short stories. Use the title, blurb, and cover. Send this out to your friends, fans, and followers. Readers will look forward to seeing your notices. You will get your name and story titles out on the electronic highway and build your brand as a writer of short stories. People will click to buy your story on Amazon.com and many will write a review. Here is an example of one of my recent posts: Here is your quick, short story weekend read: "The Garden of Love," Amazon.com/dp/B010W1D9FE “Life is good! Their boy is grown and married with kids of his own. He's got it together or does he? Why is he back? Why is he offering to help with the yard work?”

4. Find places to post online that are FREE. My motto is, It's FREE, it's for me! The benefit—you will find new readers. Granted you will not make money when you give away your work but you will build a following and your brand as a short story writer whose work people enjoy. One of the best online FREE places to post is StoryStar.com. I have posted 26 stories on this site and have had over 7000 views. The average number of views per story is 295 for my work. My most read short story, with nearly 1000 views, is Future Plans. You can find it FREE on StoryStar.com or you can buy it for .99 cents on Amazon.com/dp/B010TXRDQQ .

5. Create an anthology of your short stories and sell them as a book and/or ebook. You can also have them published in a large print edition and as an audio book. You can create a random collection and then make it into a series. I've done this with  'Tis Herself: Short Story Collection Volume One, and Volume Two, and VoluMan in Your Life.
me Three. You can also make a collection with a specific theme. See, Stories for the

6. I've also used my short stories to make mini books which I give out at book and author events. I use my document and divide the 81/2 x 11 page into four columns. I print it in landscape, front to back. I then fold it into a mini book with one short story and all my contact information. It's a FREE give away and who doesn't love FREE! Again, this brings me more readers and more exposure for my work.

Draft Valerie allen

Carolyn ~

Thanks for showing me this. They send it to me as well.
Amazon treats me very well with all of these FREE promos they send  to my readers/followers.

I am a big time user of Amazon for publishing my work and that of others.
I also review every book  I read on Amazon  and on Goodreads.
I have an author page at Amazon.com/author/valerieallen
I use this on all my promo materials so my work can be found in one place (not to mention my cute little photo!)

BTW - I am doing more publishing for others. I do not do kids picture books at this time, but ficiton, non-fiction, and poetry
are all good. Most is text but can have B/W photos and/or line drawings. I can do a template cover or they can send me
their own but it must meet KDP guidelines exactly or they won't accept it.
I charge a flat rate of $500.00.
They keep their copyright. I use KPD and get the ISBN from them. KDP pays 40% royalty directly to the author.
If anyone is looking for a good deal from an experienced KDP publisher, feel free to refer them to me at this email.

As always, thank you for your support and kind words. ðŸ˜Š

You and Lance stay safe and healthy ~
