A Poem for Endangered Species Day

I wrote this poem a few years ago but have never used it on social networking before.  That sorta seems a shame.  It won the Franklin Christoph's Prize for poetry a few years ago, too. They are the only makers of fountain pens I know of located here in America!). That's ore than I ever expect to make from poetry again!  I have the check photographed and hanging on my wall.  I kind sad to keep it hidden in the bowels of computer.  Here it is for your enjoyment. If you'd like to know more about endangered species, you can sign up for the organization's newsletter by Googling "Endangered Species Day 2023."  Ta Da!

Endangered Species

A dragon, hiding as dragons

do, to pounce upon prey, shock

them into submission with forked

tongue, spiked tail, blue-green

scales, brimstone breath. But not

a sea dragon, this—nearly misnamed

a seahorse—dainty—

disguises herself in briney

fronds, sways with the current.

her delicate horn-shaped

snout trumpets silence.

Long like a dragon,

long as a water-lily stem,

soft, and—presumably,

slick. She flourishes

her leaf-like fins, the translucent

shade of her underwater forest

of amber seaweed pads, exactly,

matches her dance to that of the kelp

—ballet in slow motion

so the visitor to her underocean

home will not see her. She will take

them by surprise

with tenderness.

~~~By Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Something There Is About Poetry and Marketing
When I received this in my email box from Amazon, at first I thought it was something my poetry partner Magdalena Ball sent me and it occurred to me how often marketing--however well done--isn't at its best when applied to books of poetry. Even rather thoughtful newsletters from exquisitely produced journals seem to lose something.  But then I thought, no. This couldn't be from Magdalena. That's when I realized it was one of Amazon's amazing benefits that few authors or publishers seem to know about. It's their combined Author Profile feature (though free, it is seldom used by authors!) combined with a typical "follow feature."  Meaning, once a reader follows the author (a lovely gift by the way), that generous reader will receive email notices of all that authors' (or poet's!) new works.  Courtesy of Amazon's algorithms! No matter where or how it came to me, I was delighted. I sent it on to my poet-friend in case she hadn't "followed" herself and therefore might be unaware it existed. Here is what I am talking about, but I urge you to keep scrolling to see one of my favorite poems in Density of Compact Bone, her newest book:
And just why do I love "Linguistic Junkyard?"
  It is dense. Rather like a Rubric Cube.
It makes me think.
The title appeals to anyone who loves words and poetry. That would be me.
Feelings are a luxury that are hard to share, but here are shared.
And, if some reader is not a fan of poetry, I say to you: "Don't try to make too much of this. It is not journalism. It is not fiction. There is so much here. Just let it flow over you and let you mind feel rather than think. What is going on here?  A bared soul.
Linguistic Junkyard
It was junk
one world among many a frivolous night
gold dusted and lost.
There’s no such thing
as division, it’s just
this illusion, persistent, like skin.
I have that luxury I know you said, leaving me again then denying there was such a thing as loneliness beneath a fragrant ruffle choose your own adventure or follow mine.
Doubt can only exist
where there is a question
the point of entry is disbelief which is just waves
taken as contractions.
What if I didn’t drink
if sobriety were a superpower instead of a failing
would memory be as strong or something else, not recall.
I couldn’t see the breach
the possibility
Rainbow Lorikeets
moved from world to world
stealing seed, inhabiting my dreams.
There was nothing
I could have done differently though I pretended to try
all I wanted
in the end was nothing
the measure of existence
my body a bow
the sound of strings, this dirge.
One of my my Frugal Book Promotion Tips About Calendars and Your Marketing
Some days I just can't resist sending my FB friends one of my #FrugalBookPromoterTips:
So, What’s a calendar for? To list world-wide and national days of celebration for inexpensive (frugal!) ways to promote, of course! Just a few steps required:
1. Enter whatever date might be related to your product or business (Like National Writers Day!) on your calendar once.
2. Set the annual alert for a few days before.
3. Make the entry recur every year.
When you get an alert each year, socially network My favorite is #EarthDay and related environmental days (there are at least three other major ones!) for the poetry book Sublime Planet (http://bit.ly/SublimePlanet) by Magdalena Ball and me. You could work your posts around a discount, a contest, a giveaway or just your altruistic self.
Celebrating Women's Equality Day with Poetry
August 26 is Women's Equality Day! I am celebrating by sharing a poem with you--something I rarely do because publishers often eschew publishing literary work that has appeared on the Web--or elsewhere!  These, however, already appeared "elsewhere"--in my chapbook of poetry called Deeper in the Pond coauthored with Magdalena Ball, owner and editor of CompulsiveReader.com. One of her poems is included.  Part of our multi award-winning Celebration Series, this chapbook was intended as a celebration of women everywhere, especially for Women's Day.  It seems even more suited to Women's Equality Day.
If you like the idea, please share and pass along the sentiment that women still have a long way to go! We readily give permission for use of our work for projects related to women's needs. Contact Carolyn on Twitter @frugalbookpromo or Magdalena @magdalenaball with plans for your project.
Narcissus Revisited
Wish not but work.
We need more than what we have.
Let us be measured
not for height or at the hip
but for the our roles.
Compensate us for compassion
so we might look beyond
our foyers with that rare
and precious skill.
I may not want,
but many of my kind do. Women.
Hidden, squeezed, ignored, ridiculed,
manipulated, raped, murdered.
Pain, poverty, politics. All enemies’
dark shadows, seaweed undulating
beneath the sheen
of the life I live.
            Even when I gaze deep
            and recognize algae
            there, feel their vile shapes,
            I do not recognize hubris,
            lurking among them, women’s
            worst foe. Those who feel
            new freedoms like I, some later-borns
unaware that they are new, accept
the yellow-bright shimmer
spread across the surface
as if it were our doing
or our due.
Acceptance works best
when paired with gratitude
Why then do we forget
            what others did for us,
            what there is yet to do?
Narcissus knows her own
reflection well. She forgets
to peer under burkas, in our jails,
in the beds of the abused,
deeper, deeper into the pond
beneath, where some
                        still suffocate.
~Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Beastly Work
At the tail end of mercy
biting, fighting
sorespun parchment
eyes its creator
with contempt.
On the spur
of warmth
vast cloud of cold gas
everywhere else
making, remaking
destroying
building again.
No one would choose
to call this work
no pay could compensate
no goal lofty enough
no endeavour ever
successful.
It’s more like
affliction.
Why
when the bed’s so soft
floor so dirty
everyone else wants something
other than your
prodigious output
do you continue
tearing
toiling
working
the awful muse?
~Magdalena Ball
What to Say to Edtors to Get Free Publicity
I thought I’d share a pitch I wrote to my local newspapers in April for Earth Day. It illustrates how we authors need to figure out how to make a query work for their particular title—in whatever news cycle might apply to its theme, characters, settings, or whatever.
This query matches my poetry book (with Magdalena Ball) called Sublime Planet with Earth Day, but you might adapt yours to other holidays or current events. I also include a few basic dos and don’ts at the end of the query letter. And, if you are a blogger or have a radio show or about anything else that would benefit from a current topic like this, feel free to contact me at hojonews@aol.com. I mean, have at it! (-: Magdalena and I have poetry chapbooks that celebrate most of the major holidays in any given year.  Here it is:
Hi, I’m an award-winning author who knows how hard it is to find good stories for Earth Day or to fit with current news about global warming which we both know is always a topic of interest.
Earth Day is sneaking up on us but I have an idea for you that will help the environmentalists in your audience celebrate. They’ll love the accessible poems about the fragility of our cosmos by my Aussie poetry partner Magdalena Ball and I. We love to share my poems about XXX and XXX. (In fact, I welcome reprints of any of my poems from any of my award-winning poetry books!)
Further there is a feature story in how we came to be partners living in separate hemispheres without having ever met. I can schedule interviews just about any time that works for you.
Please let my Sublime Planet poetry book help you with a feature story this month—one probably unlike one you have ever published.
-----
Here are the tips I promised you readers of this SharingwithWriters blog:
Notice that I didn’t bother giving the editor my name. Unless your name is already known by the contact or you are as famous as J. K. Rowling, it isn’t necessary and just keeps you from the interesting stuff that will help them choose your idea for their book page, blog post, entertainment section, radio show or whatever it is that they do.
I also didn’t mention the title in the first sentence. The only time that should come up front is if it is very catchy or outrageous.
Notice how precise the idea is. Query letters need to be clear about the benefits for the media or editor (they need material for current events and holidays). Editors are perfectly capable of moving from the particular to the general or adapting one detailed idea to another of their needs.
By the way, sending media releases—even releases that get ignored--benefits you because you can contact the same editor for the next holiday or current event. Soon they will have come to expect ideas from you that are well considered for their needs. I included another script by well-known publicist Raleigh Pinsky that you can use as a template in my Appendix of my The Frugal Book Promoter. Well-known publicist Raleigh Pinksky gave me permission to reprint it and it will give you even more detail for formulating pitches—in this case telephone pitches—that work.
A Christmas Poem for You
Wishing my SharingwithWriters subscribers and visitors a Merry Christmas. I thought you might enjoy this poem from the award-winning Christmas chapbook coauthored by Magdalena Ball and me as a kind of Christmas card-blog. Kind of light. Kind of nostalgic.
This is how it is, once, a half-lifetime
ago. The house comes alive at five
when kids too excited
to sleep noisily poke holes in
paper gift wrap, emit muffled giggles,
finally come to pull us (yawning)
out of bed. Later they begin to doubt,
hang out in the dark to prove
Santa a myth, fall asleep on the hearth.
When they’re teens the house
sleeps till ten. We eat breakfast late
then have a go at the gifts.
When they’re in college, Christmas
is a surprise package. One year an assortment
of boys’ cars—Porsches, hot rods,
clunkers—clutter the driveway. Terry
drops in with Swedish potato sausage
pungent with onions he pulverized
with an old-fashioned meat grinder.
Or the kids are all studying in France
or upstate. So, maybe a movie for
Dad and me at three. Schedules so erratic
one year I decide not to put up our one
unshakable tradition, a tree
that pushes its star to the top
of our fourteen-foot vaulted
ceiling. That was enough to roust
my son out of his dorm, hit crosstown
traffic with a huge blue fir roped
to the top of his Volkswagen. Measuring
the size of it with an upward wave
of his hand. A bargain he says. Nobody
wants to decorate this much tree
on Christmas Eve. He relishes
the joke as he pulls fragile garlands
and heirloom ornaments from their boxes
knowing that will sure enough roust
me out of my lounger to supervise.
That was then. These days we may celebrate
a couple of days before the twenty-fifth, or after,
on bastard dates left over from when others
have laid their claim on our progeny.
A new spurt of Christmas energy may arrive
in the great grandchildren generation
when we’ll be awarded honorary status,
but this spate of Christmases—call it the slow
decade—a new gift as miraculous
as a fat guy coming down the chimney.
The whole day. To think. To Write.
Uninterrupted.
