Time to Get Comfortable with Marketing Your Book--FREE!

I'll be presenting at PromoDay again. I presented at the first one a few years ago and it feels like home to be back.   It's May 31 and I'll be helping you write a killer query letter to agents and publishers--one that won't tick them off by including booboos you could never have imagined!
Jo LInsdell is the founder of PromoDay and her is her personal invitation to you to join us at no cost is below. Just go to www.PromoDay.info and register.

I’d like to personally welcome each of you to Promo Day and give you an idea of what you can expect and what I hope to achieve with the event.
  • A lot of people shy away from the marketing aspect because they don't know what to do or feel that it takes them out of their comfort zone. Promo Day is for ALL levels. Beginners and seasoned pro's can pick up tips and strategies that they can put into place right away. Sharing is encouraged so once you've tried out one of the tips, share the link to it so others can check it out. Having a support network that can give you instant feedback might be all you need to boost your confidence and kick start your marketing campaign.
  • Promoting is not only allowed, it's encouraged! There are plenty of opportunities to promote during the event and you are welcome to participant in as few or as many as you like. Feel free to tell us about you projects in the Promo section here on the forums and/or join in the social chats, interviews, panel discussions, etc... through out the day. (These will be announced in the Opportunities thread so check back regularly).
  • Make connections. Reaching out to people you don't know, even if they are in the same boat, isn't always easy. Here at Promo Day networking is simple. There are spaces where you can post your social media links here in the forums. As everyone posting there is part of the Promo Day event reaching out is easy. Send them a tweet saying "Saw you at the #PD14 event. What presentation did you like best?" This is just an example but it tells them where you know them from and starts a conversation with them. As you are both at Promo Day you have common ground to get you started [wink]
  • This year there are also live pitch sessions with publishers. No waiting for a reply to your query. If they like your pitch they'll ask to see the manuscript. If it's not right for them, you can move on to pitch else where.
  • After every event I get messages from attendees telling me that they made a connection during the event that got them a book deal, a new assignment, a new client, or a handful of hosts to help them promote their books. This is a big part of Promo Day. It opens you up to new ventures and opportunities. (Should you have a success story from the event, please let me know. I love to hear about how the event is helping people).
Promo Day has come a long way since it started in the chatroom on my author website back in 2007. I'm very proud of where it is today and excited about where it's headed.
I hope each of you will come and bring your experience and enthusiasm to our gathering. I'd also like to give a special shout out to our wonderful presenters who are offering their expertise during the event, to the publishers involved in the event, and to the PD14 sponsors who make it possible to offer this event for free.

I hope you enjoy the event

Free Writers' School--Kid You Not!

Dear Sharing with Writers and Visitors:
I’m joining well-known book marketer Trissa Tismal in a summer school opportunity and wanted you to have the information in time to take advantage of this f r ^ ^ opportunity.

The program shares everything you need to know—and what you can do--to write, publish, and sell millions of books in a special "Author Summer School." Only THIS summer school is taught by experts who will cover only what authors and aspiring authors need to know and leave out the fluff.

That’s right! School is in for summer. And the good news is that tuition is free!

I'm one of the experts Trissa is bringing together. Trissa's calling me "Professor Howard-Johnson" (and that sounds even more like a hotel!). I'm inviting you to enroll in Trissa’s Author Summer School as my guest--for free .

Each of the Summer School experts has practical, grounded information to help you get into gear this summer so you can go into full swing for autumn.

Which is why I am sending this out early, so you can enroll today and reserve the August 7th morning. I did say for FR ^ ^ did I not?

Here's the link to get on board:

 Curriculum covers…

· How to make your manuscript speak to a publisher who receives 10,000 of them a year.

· How you get your book onto the shelves of libraries and bookstores.

· With millions of books published each year, how do you stand out?

· How to write your e-book in 72 hours or less

· How do you leverage your LinkedIn and Facebook accounts to promote your book?

· What are media outlets looking for and how do you get free publicity?

· How you can sell millions of books

· And MORE!

Click here now to claim your full scholarship and enroll for, yep, free!

Hope to see you at school!

 Happy Promoting and Editing,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson

P.S. No, I don't wear one of those wacky mortar board hats, but as one of the professors in Trissa’s Author Summer School, you can ask me anything—well most anything!—and I’ll answer it.

So let's get you enrolled, OK?  I mean, you cannot get more frugal than this.

Free PromoDay Conference: Talk About Frugal!

A couple of years ago I was a presenter at Jo Linsdell's free PromoDay online conference. Then last year, Jo was an honored guest at the Roman Retreat that award-winning UCLA instructor Eve Caram and I put together. Obviously, I highly recommend it for my frugal following.  Also, you'll see this is an opportunity for you to get experience as a presenter.  Here is Jo's invitation to you:

PROMO DAY is back again this year and full of new features to give you even more opportunities to promote, network and learn. One big new addition is the forum workshops. These workshops will take place through out the day meaning you can take part regardless of what time zone you find yourself in.

I still have space for more workshops so if you'd like to join this years Promo Day Crew drop me an email with a brief outline of what your workshop will cover and your bio. If LIVE chat I'll also need to know what start time you prefer in CET (time converter on site if needed).

All crew members get one book featured in the on site bookstore for free as a thank you for your time and effort. Additional books can be added at €5,00 per book.

If you have any questions about the event please feel free to contact me.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson Conducts Seminars at Free Online Conference

World Wide Web--Writers, editors, agents, and other publishing professionals from around the world are gearing up for the third annual Catholic Writers’ Conference Online, featuring veteran presenters like Carolyn Howard-Johnson, multi-award winning novelist, poet and book marketer.

The online conference will run from February 26 to March 5, 2010 and is sponsored by the Catholic Writer’s Guild. It is free and open to writers of all levels who register between October 1, 2009 and February 15, 2010. Writers needn’t be Catholic.

Workshops and live online chats cover the gamut of writing topics from idea generation to marketing a published novel; traditional and self-publishing, article writing and fiction, and much more. In addition, prominent Catholic publishers will hear pitches, giving authors an unprecedented opportunity to chat personally regardless of their ability to travel.

The Catholic conferences draw hundreds of participants and more than scores of editors and writing professionals. Former attendee Maureen Locher, a copy editor and columnist for Mom Writer's Literary Magazine, says, "The Catholic Writers' Conference Online opened a world of possibilities to me... The quality of speakers was excellent and 'excellent' is a word I rarely use. [It was the].single best move I've taken to further my writing!"

The conference features presenters from all aspects of the publishing world. Howard-Johnson is the author of the multi award-winning series of HowToDoItFrugally books for writers including The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo ) and The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success (www.budurl.com/TheFrugalEditor). She is also an instructor for UCLA Extension Writers' Program.

Carolyn will present on "The Picture-Perfect Query Letter" and "Tweeting for Visibility" on March 1, at 9 am and 10 am respectively.
Early registration is recommended. Although the conference is offered at no charge, donations are accepted; proceeds go toward future conferences. To register or for more information, go to http://www.catholicwritersconference.com.

Free Muse Online Writers Conference: What a Line Up!

Lea Schizas is sharing more about our FREE Muse Online Writers Conference as a guest blogger today!

Each year Carolyn and I host a plethora of various workshops to suit any and all types of writers: mystery, children's writers, fantasy, romance, nonfiction, etc. Along with the specific genre workshops we also host ones that help a writer in many ways, for instance here are just a few workshops mentioned in our website:

Adding Suspense with JD Webb and Pepper Smith

Bipolars Don't Twitch: Mental Illness Workshop with Cathy Chance

Have a character with a disorder? Then workshop all week with Cathy Chance and flesh your character out.

How To Promote When You Don’t Know How with Jamieson Wolf

Pre-Publisher Book Marketing with Karina Fabian

"So, you want to be a Freelance Writer" with Bob Medak

Red Hot Internet Basics: Touring Yourself Online with Penny Sansevieri

When Do Promotions Begin? with L. Diane Wolfe

Online Marketing for Authors: Build a Platform and Sell More Books with Stephanie Chandler

and so many more.

Besides the weeklong workshops, we also have one hour real time chats and this year we are thrilled to introduce Pitch Sessions with various publishers and agents taking part. During the summer for all who have registered before the deadline, an info e-mail will go out explaining how you may be one of the lucky writers who will have a turn to pitch to a publisher or agent. Details as to guidelines and what to do will be sent but you need to be registered. Simply go to http://www.themuseonlinewritersconference.com click on Registrations and make sure you are on board for our 2009 Conference to be held October 12 - 18 this year.

Now, it's not because we organize the event that I'm so hyped and proud of it but it's because of the talented professionals who volunteer their time and effort to guide and teach writers what they have learned over the course of their careers.

The one week private forum workshops are intense, let's not quip about that. You need to dedicate that week to a few workshops and give it your all. Just because it's free many have the assumption 'you get what you paid for'...well, let me just say you will be surprised at the info-overload that will cascade your Muse that week.

Not only are the handouts valuable information you can refer to over and over again, but the networking will help you in your marketing and promoting at some point in your career. Along with the Conference we also have a conference yahoo group that now boasts close to 600 members who have attended the conference in the past. Register and you will find the link to join this group of professionals who never tire helping one another.

Carolyn, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about the conference. All I want to ask of your readers is to please spread the word. The more the merrier. We don't charge a fee but ask anyone who can to please donate. This year we are committed to give back a portion of all donations to the conference to the Shaking the System-Autism Awareness Foundation- a project that is very dear to me and my co-writer. We've been offering awareness days at various establishments, recently hosted an autism awareness conference with four guest speakers, and in June 2009 we are hosting our first autism awareness walkathon.
