Gillian Felix Gives Ins and Outs of Running a Blog Tour

Today's SharingwithWriters blog post comes to you from my online friend Gillian Felix, a prolific author and marketer.  As you know I believe in frugal, grassroots marketing and online blog tours are a perfect way to achieve exposure for a launch or a boost for your book long after its release. Thank you, Gillian!
HOWS AND WHYS OF BLOG TOURS
By Gillian Felix
While blog touring is not exactly a new way of marketing, it is still new to some authors and bloggers. I thought I’d address a list of questions I’ve gotten about blog tours from new authors and bloggers.
What is a blog tour?
A blog tour is the quickest way to get your book or product in front of a larger audience.  For the sake of the book reading audience, let's refer to products as books, from a marketing perspective, books are products, from the author’s perspective books are their babies.
Here's what happens on a blog tour; your book gets promoted on different blogs within a certain time frame. Each blog has a different audience, just getting booked on 5 blogs exposes your book to many different eyes. This is your time to shine with promotions, giveaways, or guest posts. I always suggest that if you are doing a guest post, do it on the topic of your novel or something that will give the readers an insight into who you are. The fact is, people buy from people they know and like. So don’t be shy. Don’t over promote either, no one likes a show-off.
Why do book bloggers like blog tours so much?
Bloggers, especially avid bloggers are always on the lookout for new content. Researching and creating content takes a lot of work and time. For a blogger participating in a blog tour, content is provided. Blog tours also tend to drive a lot of traffic to a blog. Here’s how; if an author has a large following and their book is featured on a site, then their followers may follow and even promote the post for you. The blogger may gain new readers and subscribers because new people are discovering their blog. That’s just two reasons but there are many others.
Basic information you’ll need to get started
Your media kit: you should have this anyway. Your basic media kit should have your book cover, synopsis, contact links, biography, purchase links. If you want to add a giveaway or special promotion during your tour you should have the links to that in your media kit.
Guest post topic: I always encourage this. Some bloggers will give you a topic to write on because they know what is of interest to their audience. If they don’t provide the topic, have one ready, it can be between 300-500 words. That’s my recommendation because your promo material will go after this and you don’t want to make your post too long. That would be like overstaying your welcome. So be respectful in regards to the length of your post.
Google Forms: Learning how to create a Google form has truly been a huge part of the blog tour process for me. Google forms are used so bloggers to sign up for your tour.
A free Rafflecopter account: I use Rafflecopter because they are easy to use. Rafflecopter is the site that hosts your giveaways. I always recommend a giveaway of some kind because it encourages engagement, you can use it to build your email list, get followers and connect with readers. Remember, people buy from who they know and like.
Patience: Last and most importantly, patience, is needed. You will need to research bloggers in your genre and contact them directly with a pitch. Here’s how I got started:
Googled book bloggers in my genre. Birds of a feather flock together and a lot of bloggers are friends with other bloggers in the same genre, so I was able to get a few more bloggers with one search.
Twitter: I started following authors in my genre and found out who their followers are then I started following and connecting with them.
These are the basics to get you started. My first novel Changes (Family Portrait Book 1), hit the Amazon bestsellers list in its category for one whole month, and I attribute that to the promo boast I got from blog tour promotion. While I cannot guarantee every book will do the same, it is worth a try.
I’ve compiled the step-by-step procedures, handy tools and tips along with book bloggers who I have worked with in the past, they have given me permission to include them in this handy ebook called Blog Tours: A Win-Win for Authors and Bloggers. http://www.amazon.com/Blog-Tours-Win-Win-Authors-Bloggers-ebook/dp/B00M9ROAYO/
For those of you who do not have the time to put together your own blog tour, you can do a search for tour companies who will put one together for you, or you can visit my website Plain Talk Book Marketing http://www.plaintalkbm.com/ to see what special promotions I have for authors (Hint: Look in the right corner under: For Authors and Bloggers).

Amazon Announce Preorder Launch Program for E-Books

Most questions I get asked revolve around launching a book appropriately  (and how getting reviews plays into that!). New authors seldom understand the benefits Amazon offers authors for getting exposure and how to utilize them. I often cover topics like these in my SharingwithWriters newsletter--often as brief tips like this one from the August letter:

E-Book Publishing Tip: Amazon just announced that they have instituted a pre-order program to help you promote the launch of your e-book on Amazon just as the big publishers do for their hardcovers and their paperbacks. Learn more about the program on Amazon's page and more about setting your launch date ahead in The Frugal Book Promoter. You'll learn how this tactic helps you take advantage of both pre-order time and also allows you to apply for reviews with big review journals like Publishers Weekly that require up to 16 weeks of pre-pub notice for your book to qualify for a review. There is still more on that process at this page in the Writers Resources section of my HowToDoItFrugally Web site: http://howtodoitfrugally.com/reviews_and_review_journals.htm.

To subscribe to SharingwithWriters, send an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE in the subject window to HoJoNews@aol.com. Your welcome letter will include a few additional free benefits you can use to promote your book.

Letting Amazon Help You with Easy Book Launch

Do you know what Amazon Kindle Countdown program is? How about their Matchbook program? (I have discussed the latter a bit in my SharingwithWriters newsletter and this blog, so the chances you know about this one are somewhat better!)
And what about their 5 day promotion program in which you can discount your book or give it away to kick start your book’s campaign? (It’s been around a while, but there is still a lot of misunderstanding about this “giving a book away” business).

All three benefits are offered by Amazon Kindle through their Kindle Select Program. And I love them all from a pure marketing standpoint.

I’ve seen so many new authors decide on a marketing plan without getting full information first. Obviously getting the full lowdown on book marketing is not a ten-minute project (which is why I wrote The Frugal Book Promoter), but I thought it would help if I gave you—all of you, not just the newbies—a fast rundown on a very good marketing approach to your new book. It may be an especially good, easy, inexpensive launch idea for a second edition or way to remarket a book that’s been around for a while. This plan isn't in any way complete in terms of all the possible exigencies but you might at least consider it.

So here’s a marketing approach-in-a-nutshell you might consider.

1.   Start your marketing campaign for a new book by releasing your e-book first with Amazon’s Kindle.

2.   Use the benefits listed above that are available only the Kindle Select Program (meaning that you must give Amazon your e-book as an exclusive for 90 days—though you may have the print book anywhere else you want to during that time).

3.   Publicize your e-book like crazy using all of Select's benefits. Get it out there. Get the buzz going. Ask for reviews from those who get your book free or at a big discount.

4.   Then, if you want to have your book available across many other e-book programs, withdraw from Amazon’s program at the end of 90 days and get it installed on Smashwords, Nook, etc. But do know that in my newsletter I quote from an article in the IBPA Independent magazine that says most books that use Kindle's program exclusively are more profitable than the ones that are available on many of the other e-book platforms as well. It wasn't clear if they were taking into consideration the costs and time involved with reformatting that may be required for the different programs, but it's something to consider.

5.   Depending on what you decide based on the profit vs. distribution conundrum I mentioned above, you can leave your book in the Kindle Select Program and eventually repeat your campaign (with slight variations) as the terms of your agreement allow (maybe once a year.)

PS: I’m using something like the above marketing plan for the second edition of my The Frugal Editor: Do-it-yourself editing secrets for authors: From your query letter to final manuscript to the marketing of your new bestseller. It’s Updated! Expanded! Newly formatted! (Which it desperately needed!) It has a new cover by Chaz DeSimone and a new subtitle. And is available for the moment only on Kindle. Eventually, I’ll reformat the second edition for print, too, but only after I’ve utilized the power of Amazon. (3D book cover by Gene Cartwright of iFOGO .)

PPS: If you don't want to miss articles like this one, subscribe to my SharingwithWriters newsletter at http://howtodoitfrugally.com and get an e-copy of my fun and fast booklet, Great Little Last-Minute Edits, also available in paperback. The subscribe window is in the upper left corner of almost every Web site page.

On Bestseller Lists, Book Ratings and Ethics

A few years ago, author David A. Vise riled industry insiders when he bought thousands of his own book from Barnes&Noble.com to sign and resell on his own Web site. He said he was simply promoting the book. I was a new author and could see how he might not have understood the ethical ramifications.

David Vise didn't do anything that hasn't been done since Joseph P. Kennedy "bought" John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage a top place on The New York Times Best Sellers List. Vise didn't do anything that many authors haven't done; writers often buy their books from one of the online bookstores because they get service faster from the web booksellers than from their own publishers.

Some may say "two wrongs don't make a right."

And I'd agree.

Trouble is, what is "right?" Is The New York Times list always "fair," anyway? I've heard people (indeed, experts!) say the data-gathering for that list is skewed by the accuracy of reporting stores, the frequency of an author's events, the idea that publisher reports don't consider the number of books returned and a whole lot more.

We all know that the entire publishing industry system is one of favoritism. It ignores books because they are published on a particular kind of press The very process that publishers use for selecting titles panders to sales rather than literary quality. I think it's wonderful that under such a system so many really good books do get the attention they deserve and saddened that so many deserve better than they get. It just doesn't seem fair.

What about book clubs that only consider books published by big publishers? Is that fair?

What about paid-for book reviews? Can they be trusted?

What about online book launches that encourage people to buy books within a certain time period to see if they can make a book a #1 bestseller?

What is fair in the book industry these days?

I am not defending David Vise's actions. But as a novelist and poet who is just trying to see that her book gets exposure and that she is paid royalties on books that are sold to those who read them, I constantly see ideas and offers that reek of "unethical" to me—or border on it. After some years at looking at so many manipulating the already corrupt system any way they can, here's where I've decided I must ethically draw the line:

I've decided that I can legitimately buy the books I send to reviewers and to the media directly from Amazon.com (their prices are generally lower than B&N's). This process does a couple of things for me. Amazon ships my orders faster than some of my publishers. It keeps an online record of the addresses of these important media folks for future reference. It's almost as cheap as ordering from my publisher, especially when I factor in freight. And yes, it edges Amazon's ratings in my favor, though ever so slightly. But is sure won't rig those ratings enough to shoot my books to bestsellerdom—on Amazon's list or any other.

I also often buy my own books from online bookstores when I send them as gifts. Again, it's a thrifty and convenient not to have to pay shipping twice on the same book. And the numbers are small. The intent isn't to rig the system.

If Vise bought 17,000 books and put a match to them, he was probably trying to tamper with the Best Seller list. That he bought 17,000 and resold them becomes problematic. So many things that have to do with ethics boil down to motivation. And maybe quantity. I can see why he was tempted. All of us should give our great promotion ideas a quick once over to see if they pass the ethics test. And only we can truly judge our own motives.

If Vise had bought 17,000 books that were then donated to libraries, the homeless, etc., would that have worked for some ethicists? Doing what he did doesn't seem fair to those authors who haven't the means to play the same game, but then--as I said before--what is fair?

By now most authors have gotten used to a whole lot of things that are unfair.

The Amazon Launch for Your Book: What You Can Learn from My Mistakes

As the author of The Frugal Book Promoter (http://budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo) and other award-winning books in the HowToDoItFrugally series of books, I probably shouldn’t have made any mistakes with the online launch of the second edition. And I probably wouldn’t have if I had been taking my own advice.

In the first edition of The Frugal Book Promoter I warned people that it’s never too early to begin promoting a book. That was years ago! Sometimes we need a boot in the pants to remember what we already know.  I shouldn’t have waited so long to begin making lists and checking them twice!

And since that first edition was published I had built a great platform that I thought would be sufficient. And that brings me to my biggest mistake. Hubris. We authors who have been around awhile are often sure that we can rely on what we have done and who we already know. My contact list included Denise Cassino, an online launch specialist (www.mybestsellerlaunch.com), and I knew I could rely on her. I have a huge contact list I had been collecting assiduously. What more did I need?

Well, The Frugal Book Promoter also warns authors to categorize their lists. Which I did. But I didn’t have a specific category for the kinds of writers and people who run writers’ services I could ask for bonuses. Bonuses are those things that we offer people when they buy our book on a certain day to try to raise our sales rank. I pulled together a great bunch of bonuses, but after the fact I kept remembering folks I could have asked so it wasn’t nearly as long as it could have been and these bonus partners help an author get the word out (online) about your book.

Further, I took a vacation just before the launch so I hadn’t given myself much thinking time. Again hubris. I reiterate in my book that getting publicity and doing promotion is a partnership. The people an author or publisher hires to help them can’t do it on their own. They need both ideas and cooperation from the author.

Hubris. I had launches before. One for my novel at the Autry Museum of Western History. One for my book of creative nonfiction at my home. Several at bookstores for chapbooks of poetry. But they were realtime launches. This online launch was different. Launches designed to raise ratings at online bookstores are done online and needed lots of techy expertise. At least I knew that I needed Denise!

Services for online launches are like a bowl of minestrone. They come in different sizes, at different prices. The different ingredients are designed to do different things for the health of your book. The more you know about them before you start, the easier it will be to make choices based on the time you have, the money you have and the needs of your particular book.

I knew that when you hire any publicist, you aren’t just buying services. You’re buying their network, their contacts. Their Rolodex is at least as important as their expertise. I didn’t know how much I could do to support Denise because the word “online” mislead me. It seemed so…well, automated. I was right but I was also wrong. No matter what your expert’s level of expertise, the author is still always a vital ingredient. They bring the personal stuff to the launch buffet.

I also had a grasp of how to promote on online bookstores but I still needed Denise to lead me through lots of little things I didn’t know. Luckily, time wasn’t so short she couldn’t do that. Stuff like getting one’s Kindle edition and paperback edition connected. Things like getting your book into a suitable Amazon category with as little competition as possible. Thinks like running a “like” and “tag” campaign before you even begin the launch. If you don’t know about those things, you need some help, too. Yes you do.

I thought this campaign would be lots less work than a book tour. Let me tell you, after two days focusing on online sales, I was exhausted. On the night of my launch I fell into bed at 8 pm. I know people who have stayed up all night checking ratings. I am inspired by their stamina but not about to emulate it!

So, was my campaign a success? That’s the other thing I learned. Online launch campaigns are just like marketing in general, though they can be measured more accurately. When you hit #1 in Amazon’s sales ratings you’ve made it. But is that really your only goal? I don’t think it is. My book hit a very low (and fantastic!)  rating of 1,422 (the lower the better) in overall books but never made it to #1 in its category. #4 was the best we could do for a book in the competitive category of marketing. Here’s what the campaign did:

1.      It gave me new opportunities to connect. Even a mistake we made with the bonuses gave me a chance to reconnect with people who had already ordered The Frugal Book Promoter.

2.      The new names of opt-in writers I collected were worth their weight in marketing gold.

3.      The new partners who contributed to the bonuses the campaign offered—well, that was more than worth the effort.

4.      Oh, yeah! At least for some time, my book beat Stephen King’s On Writing, a moment even noncompetitive me shall cherish! Mmmm. And a couple Writer’s Digest market books!

Online book launches are like anything else in marketing. They’re about branding. They’re about exposure. They’re about networking. They’re about sharing. Most of all they’re about learning more and having some fun. Marketing in all its aspects is a vital part of publishing. An online book launch is a way to learn to love it.

3. Authors can also set up their BookTweeter settings to tweet about their book on Twitter every time somebody previews their book. Again, BookTweeter is part of the BookBuzzr suite of online book-marketing technologies.
4. "The BookBuzzr Mini-Widget" - this is basically a mini widget that can be used in places where the larger sized widget does not fit.
create the AuthorPage widget from BookBuzzr and to connect it to your Facebook fan page you have to sign up for BookBuzzr Author Pro or Pro Plus Subscription.
BookBuzzr Author Pro - This technology helps authors promote their books to book lovers in an innovative, patent-pending method on our Freado.com website. This technology costs authors $9 per month. In return our technology will get the author's book-cover memorized(CoverMatcher ) a 200 times during the month to their target audience. Also, authors can decide to simply give away their book on Freado.com as a free gift. They get exposure from our book-lover players playing the game on the site and bidding for books.

By signing up for BookBuzzr Author Pro or Pro Plus you can create the AuthorPage widget from BookBuzzr and connect it to your Facebook fan page.

The BookBuzzr AuthorPage Facebook Fan Page Technology:

1. Provides tabbed design for better engagement with fans

2. Increases likelihood of more people “Liking” your page

3. Increases likelihood of people returning back to your page

Other Benefits of a BookBuzzr Author Pro or Pro Plus Subscription:

1. Exposure for Your Book in Freado’s Hangman Word Games:
As a subscriber to BookBuzzr Author Pro, you also get to show your book inside the Freado Hangman Games. These are casual word games that are enjoyed by book readers. You can ensure that your book shows up only on themes that are related to your book. For example, if you’ve written a book on vampires, you can ensure that it appears on a game titled “Top 10 Vampire Movies of All Time”

2. Exposure for Your Book in the Prizes section on Freado.com:
If you are a BookBuzzr Author Pro subscriber, you can also give away your book as a prize on Freado.com. Book lovers then bid with points (which they have earned from playing games on the site) for your book. This creates buzz and interest in your book. Further, your book shows up in the BookBuzzr newsletter which has thousands of readers. Your book also shows up on Freado’s Facebook fan page in the Prizes section.

3. Save Time via BookBuzzr Amazon Alerts:
Checking Amazon Sales Rank can be a major time waster for most authors. BookBuzzr’s Amazon Alerts tool (available free with a BookBuzzr Author Pro subscription) frees you from the time-wasting grip of the Amazon sales rank. It sends you an email alert ONLY if your sales rank has improved (indicating the “ka-ching”.) And it sends you a ‘daily digest’ with information about how your sales rank moved during each day. You can thus stay focused on your activities without breaking your flow, wasting time or having to feel de-motivated if you see that your sales rank has nose-dived.

4. Exposure on Freado’s Facebook Fan Page:
Most authors understand that a Facebook fan page (aka public profile) can be a powerful way to market and promote their books. If you are BookBuzzr Author Pro subscriber, we will promote your book on our Facebook fan page with a link to your Facebook fan page.

5. Access to Premium Book Marketing Technology Content:
The book marketing technology experts at BookBuzzr also run a number of webinars every month with other industry experts. Questions such as “How do I sell books on Facebook?” or “Can I use Twitter to promote a book contest” are answered by book publicity experts with real life experiences. These webinars eventually land up in the premium content section on your BookBuzzr Book Marketing Home page. BookBuzzr Premium content is accessible only to BookBuzzr Author Pro subscribers.

6. Extra exposure on Freado.com in the Interviews Section:
As a premium paying author, you get an extra tab on your Freado author profile page where we feature an interview with you. This helps visitors to better understand who you are and why they should be interested in your book.

7. BookBuzzr’s Goodwill Builder:
As an author you want to build a relationship with your readers. One way to do this is to give your readers something of value when they visit your web page, Facebook page (or Facebook fan page) or Twitter page. This could be interesting content, an opportunity to participate in a prize giveaway or something similar. When a visitor comes to your website or blog (or Facebook page), they get to see a message that offers 1,000 free points for use on Freado.com. The Goodwill Builder is available only for BookBuzzr Author Pro subscribers.

8. Premium Access to BookBuzzrs Book Marketing Technologies Forum:
As an author you may have many technology related questions. “Should I use Wordpress for my website?” “ How do I run a contest on Facebook?” etc. But you should be spending time writing books … not researching answers to technology questions. The proposed BookBuzzr Book Marketing Technologies Forum allows you to ask your question to other BookBuzzr authors and to the staff at BookBuzzr. This forum will be the world’s first and only forum dedicated to answering the ‘book marketing technology’ questions of authors.
