Sorry, but Blogger/Google + Partnership Feels Like Bunk

This will be in my SharingwithWriters newsletter but I didn't want to wait for subscribers to this blog to see it--just in case you, too, are a faithful user of Blogger:

Blogger is offering to let those who comment on your blog do double duty by including those comments on their Google + stream, all as part of the same post.  You would need to sign in to a link they give you to enable them to do so.  It sounds like a great idea but beware! If you do this, only people who also have Google Plus accounts will be able to comment on your Blogger blog. That feels very exclusionary to me--and not too smart!  Thought I'd warn you!

You may want to subscribe to my newsletter. I can't possibly repeat all the tips in the letter on this blog. I mean, some don't quite fit the focus of this blog. Then there's time. You know how it goes. But it's free, just like this blog. So let me know at HoJoNews (at) AOL (dot) com if you'd like me to subscribe you. Happy to do it.

Amazon & Google Blogger Make Great Pair

Amazon and Google put their giant heads together to help you blog more professionally and make some money for you, too.

I reported on this Blogger benefit in my Sharing with Writers newsletter before, but this message came directly from Blogger and I wanted you to see it. So, in effect, Blogger is my guest blogger today:

Do you link to Amazon.com in your blog posts? If so, a recent Blogger integration (http://buzz.blogger.com/2009/12/blogger-integrates-with-amazon.html) may be just the thing for you. Blogger now integrates directly with Amazon Associates (https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/join/landing/main.html), giving you the ability to search the entire Amazon.com product catalog without ever leaving the Blogger post editor. Writing a review of Avatar and want to point your readers to the DVD that just came out? Not only can you link to the DVD, you can also include the cover art and buy it now info from Amazon so your readers know how much it costs without ever leaving your site.

You might even make some money in the process! Amazon pays an advertising fee to a Blogger user who is a participant in Amazon's Associates Program* and whose visitors buy products linked from their blog. Sign up is simple - just click on the "Monetize" tab in Blogger, then click on "Amazon Associates" to get started. Once enabled, you will see a new Amazon gadget next to the familiar Blogger post editor:

Whether you want to make some extra money, or you just want to add some pizzazz to your blog posts, the Amazon Associates integration is a great way to add color to any blog post about books, movies, electronics, music or any other product sold at Amazon.com.

More details at Blogger Buzz (http://buzz.blogger.com/2009/12/blogger-integrates-with-amazon.html ), or just click Monetize in your blog's dashboard to get started.

Thanks for using Blogger!
Regards,
The Blogger Team

*Some Blogger users may be ineligible to participate in Amazon's Associates Program. See the Associates Program Operating Agreement for more information.

I use this feature in all of my blogs including www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com (always available for you to use for your own book promotion—guidelines are in the left column), www.TheFrugalEditor.blogspot.com, this one , and even my www.WarPeaceTolerance.blogspot.com. You can get more information on great, focused blogging with my book Your Blog, Your Business: A Retailer’s Guide to Garnering Customer Loyalty and Sales Online and In Store (www.budurl.com/Blogging4Retailers).

The widgets in this blog post for one of the books in my new book in the HowToDoItFrugally series are examples of things you can do with this new, nifty tool. The Corel program is one I once reviewed for Amazon. It is here to show you that anything that is being sold on Amazon can be displayed on your blog. Anything! Including books for Kindle.

On Branding and Your Web Site

Gayle Trent is guest blogging today on how people can upgrade their Web sites. Most of us need to do at least a little tweaking.

How Can My Web Site Help or Hinder My Writing?

By Gayle Trent, author of cozy mysteries

Before you go thinking you’ve heard all you need to know about Web sites, you might want to take a look at this article. I thought I knew everything I needed to know about them, but I found I was horribly wrong when I had my ite overhauled by a professional.

Blogs

We’re told every writer needs a blog. So I had blogs. I had a WordPress blog, a Tripod blog and three Blogger blogs. This scattered me and my brand all over the place. While it’s good to be found in a number of places, I learned that search engines don’t recognize free sites as well as they do hosted sites. Therefore, it’s better for your main blog to be a part of your Web site.

More Than One Site

I had sites for different books, different names and different ventures. As a result, the web designer told me I was too fragmented. Your one site should act as a funnel, directing attention to you, building your brand as a writer and bringing everything together. Your site should define who you are and what you do. First and foremost–careerwise–I write cozy mysteries. I also do coaching and speaking. Those two features now have tabs on my main Web site. That way, someone who goes to a site and learns about Gayle Trent, the writing coach, will also be aware that Gayle Trent writes cozy mysteries and enjoys speaking.

What Will It Take To Get YOU To the Next Level?

Basically, you need to ask yourself where you want to be and what it will take to get you there. Do you need a more professional online image? Do you need clips to entice editors and/or agents? Are you effectively promoting your books, your writing or your coaching talents? Is your site clear and easy to navigate? If you’re not sure, ask someone to go to your site and tell you how quickly and easily they found your book; learned what your book is about; learned where to buy your book; learned how to become part of your community; learned what else you do; learned about your upcoming appearances, if any. Then, take a look at a number of sites of writers you admire to see what they’re bringing to their site that your site may be lacking. Discover how you can add something similar to your own site.

A Two-in-One Feature:Doing Your Blog Readers a Favor and Blogging When You TraveI

As many of you know, I recommend blogging as a way for authors to keep their names before the public and to increase loyalty among followers. I've been traveling lately (and plan to do so again) which has caused me some problems with keeping my blogs active. Prill Boyle is the ultimate blogger (http://defyinggravitynow.blogspot.com) for those of us reaching, well . . . a certain age and I asked her to share with me (and you!) how to make the wonderfully useful blog index found on her blog and to do the post-dating that she does when she travels so that her blog doesn't go fallow. Here's her answer:

I'd be happy to share with you and your readers how to post-date entries and make a label list (which I prefer to call a "Blog Index"). The first I do to help myself; the second I do to help my readers.

Post-Dating Entries

1. While in either the "Compose" or "Edit Html" mode of Blogger, click on "Post Options" at the bottom left of your screen.
2. In the "Post Date" and "Time" blanks, fill in whatever date and time you'd like your post to appear.
3. Now click on the "Publish Post" button. Your post will not be published until the date and time you've specified.
This is an extremely helpful feature. Blog traffic is much higher when you post regularly, but you might not have the time and energy to post as often as your readers would like. This way you can write several posts at one sitting but space out their publication. You can also have your posts appear when you're away.

Creating a Label List:

To create an index of subjects addressed on your blog, first you have to create labels for your posts.
1. In Blogger, you create labels in either the "Compose" or "Edit Html" mode.
2. After you finish typing a post, simply fill in the "Labels for this post" blank at the bottom of the screen. Keep in mind that any label you choose will end up on your label list. I believe that it's best, therefore, to put yourself in the mind of your readers and think about what labels would be useful to them.
Once you've created a few labels, there's a second, amazingly useful tool that you can use to add to, subtract from, and/or change both your list and your individual labels. To manage your list, do the following:

Managing Your List:

1. On the Blogger Dashboard, click on the "Edit Posts" tab near the top of your screen.
2. On the left-hand side of the screen, you should see a list of all the labels you've created. To the right of this list, you'll see an inventory of all the posts you've written arranged from newest to oldest.
3. To delete a label from your label list, click on the label itself.
4. Then on the list of postings that appear, select any or all of the ones you no longer want to have that label.
5. In the drop-down menu box titled "Label Actions," scroll down to "Remove Label" and click on the label you want to remove. It's that simple.
6. Play with this same function to teach yourself how to add labels or change them. (It's a similar process for both.)
Once you're happy with the list of labels that appears on the left side of the "Edit Posts" screen, you're ready to create a label list that will appear on the sidebar of your blog. Here's how to do this:

Creating a Label List/Index on Your Blog Sidebar

1. Go onto your Blogger dashboard.
2. Click on the "Layout" tab (at the top of the screen)
3. Click on "Add a Gadget" (on the right-hand side of the screen)
4. Scroll down the list of gadgets until you see "Labels."
5. Click on the "Labels" button.
So, if you don't use Blogger or Blogspot, you may be able to adapt Prill's methods to the service you use. And, do drop by to see her blog. It seems only right! You can also find prill was www.prillboyle.com
